| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description 101 CASE STUDIES REVEAL HOW TO ARRANGE FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES - Never before has there been a way to effectively study the before and after pictures of professional stagers and redesigners to sharpen one's skills. Now best selling author and expert, Barbara Jennings, shows you 101 case studies in random order of actual projects from her files. These studies include the before and after pictures (in black and white) of students and professional stagers and redesigners (including a few of the author's as well), but readers will also get the descriptions of the room's problems, descriptions of what was done to improve the situation, and the author's critiques. Never before has an expert evaluated the work of others and herself so that readers could learn from the successes and the failures of those already in the field of staging and redesign. Since evaluating actual on-site photos is a fantastic way to learn, this book is a treasure trove of practical help and informative guidance. It is ideal for consumers as well as practicing stagers and redesigners.
Each Case Study shows you the before picture - the way the client had arranged the room before the professional arrived. Commentary will tell you a bit about the situation and point out things in the picture you should note. Then readers will be given the after picture, along with professional critiques on what the stager or re-designer did to improve the situation - both good or not so good. In every case the stager or re-designer DID improve the room, but the author will give specific comments about the success or failure of what was done.
After a decade of teaching staging and redesign, Barbara Jennings notes there are certain aspects of arrangement techniques that continue to be confusing or ignored by professionals and consumers alike. | Customer Reviews: Best book for arranging furniture July 21, 2010 Business Pro (California) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I had the opportunity to preview this book prior to publishing. I found it to be extremely thorough, easy to read and comprehend and one of the author's best books to date. Anyone in the home staging or redesign business will find this a real asset to their library. I love seeing before and after pictures and this book is full of real life examples to study and learn from. Thanks Barbara for being so generous with your expertise, as usual. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about how to arrange their home, but also for those in the staging and redesign business in particular.
Learning from the Don'ts is very helpful July 31, 2010 Inspired Trainer (OR) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book gives you exactly what it promised to give - training on what NOT to do as well as what TO do. Although the photos are in black and white (pretty common for these kinds of books), I enjoyed seeing the before picture and following that the after picture for each case study. The author's explanations of the challenge of each room, the explanations of what the individual stagers or redesigners did, and the author's critiques (sometimes favorable and sometimes not so favorable) have been very valuable to me personally and to some of the people I have helped get into the business. It was interesting to see how common certain mistakes are. I appreciate knowing I'm not the only one who has made them. Too often one sees just the pictures without knowing whether the work is considered good or not. So I'm glad to have this resource. My thanks to Ms. Jennings for the courage to go out on a limb to write this type of book that focuses on the "not so good" as well as the good. If you're a real student of your craft, you'll appreciate this unique approach. It's very, very effective. I hope she'll write more.
Love this book! August 5, 2010 HomeDecorator 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this book. I learned a lot about how to stage a room for my clients or to arrange furniture for those that plan on staying in their homes. It is an easy read and I found it very helpful to see the before and after pictures. The case studies are real, actual situations and I can really relate to the problems described and the solutions suggested. The pictures may be black and white, but that is minor compared to the guidance you get. I will definitely keep this book for future reference and recommend it to anyone serious about improving their work.
This is Not Helpful July 28, 2010 gracey 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are looking to see the contrast between bad design and good design, this is not the book to buy. The photographs are in black and white and do not show how to redesign or stage a room. The critiques are adequate, but the reader cannot discern what the author is describing. Most often the author criticizes the "after" pictures for the errors the designer made. My question: why show what not to do? Why not show what really works. Color is so important in good design. This is not addressed at all with the black and white photos. I purchased this book from her website at premium price. It is a paperback and a total waste of money.
